Infectious diseases cause almost half of all deaths in the developing world and have an even greater impact on productivity and quality of life. To lessen the impact of these diseases, the global health community needs low-cost tools to diagnose and prevent the spread of infectious diseases. By addressing the infections before they spread, vaccines represent the most cost effective way of managing these diseases. When vaccines aren’t available, rapid point-of-contact diagnostics are needed to help medical professionals accurately prescribe effective treatments. Moreover, when accurate diagnoses are gathered from the field, public health officials can better analyze the data and eventually better manage the epidemics. Despite their potential to dramatically improve global health, developing these tools (vaccines and diagnostics) for the developing world is not a priority for for-profit companies, as the financial returns remain minimal.
Mission
The overall mission for Global Solutions for Infectious Diseases (“GSID”) is to expand the development of low-cost effective tools for the diagnosis and prevention of infectious diseases afflicting less developed countries. As a non-profit organization, GSID focuses its development efforts in parts of the world where these tools are needed the most. Our leadership has extensive experience both in private sector product development and field application of vaccines in the developing world, and therefore able to provide guidance and support to organizations such as private foundations, public-private partnerships and private sector companies dedicated to solving global public health issues.
The first target for GSID is an HIV/AIDS vaccine (Please click here to read more). In addition to our HIV/AIDS program, GSID is identifying other tools for the diagnosis and prevention of infectious diseases. Over the long term, our goal is to manage a portfolio of products at various stages of development, in order to diversify the risk of product development and broaden our base of our expertise.
